Today indigo is cultivated in gardens and found wild in fields and ditches throughout the Carolinas. It is a modern-day reminder of the young woman, Eliza Lucas Pickney of colonial Charleston, who developed indigo into an unlikely cash crop that rivaled the indigo from France.
